Period sashes, and the work volume crews will not do
True divided lights, a sash built from many small panes with real muntins between them rather than a grille clipped over a single sheet, are common on the period housing near the center of town. A six-over-six sash is twelve small panes, and every muntin is two more edges that have to be finished by hand. There is no technique that makes this fast. A house with twenty such windows takes as long as a much larger house with modern glass.

Old wooden sashes also need a different hand. Glazing putty on a century-old sash can be brittle, the paint film at the sash-to-glass line may already be failing, and water pushed into a failing joint does damage. We work drier on old sashes and we tell you what we find.

Glass in the oldest sashes here is not modern float glass. Cylinder-drawn panes run thinner, carry a slight wave, and they flex under a squeegee if you lean on them the way you can on a new insulated unit. We work lighter on those. We also do not put a blade to old glass. Century-old panes carry surface imperfections a scraper can catch on, and a scratch in original glass is not something anyone can polish out afterward.
Something we get asked to fix and cannot is a fogged double pane. Once the seal between the two sheets fails, the moisture is inside a sealed cavity and no cleaning reaches it. Ashland has a good number of 1990s replacement units sitting in period openings, and plenty of them have gone. Cleaning the two surfaces you can reach makes the haze more obvious rather than less, so we point them out and leave them off the count.
