The cottonwood is Nebraska's state tree, and from late May the seed fluff comes off in volume along the Platte. Near the river it is not a light dusting. It is the defining condition of the season. On glass it layers over the spring tree pollen already there, and the two together turn to paste in the first rain rather than washing off. On screens it is worse: mesh is effectively a filter designed to catch it, the fluff mats into the weave rather than sitting on it, and once wet-then-dried it becomes closer to felt than to dust.
That is why screens matter more in Valley than almost anywhere. A screen carrying a matted season of cottonwood measurably reduces the light into the room, and perfect glass behind a loaded screen is a room that still looks gray.
Then summer brings the second Valley condition: river-valley grit through the dry stretch, fine sandy material that the wind picks up off exposed ground and open water margins and puts back down on the glass.

Water supply varies more in Valley than people assume.
