Glass in Valley has its own problems

Window cleaning in Valley, Nebraska

Valley sits close to the Platte, and river-valley homes see more airborne grit through the dry stretch of summer plus heavier cottonwood in late spring.

Across the metro the constant is the water: Metropolitan Utilities District lime-softens the supply to about 10 grains per gallon, which is hard enough that sprinkler overspray dries into mineral spotting and, left long enough, etches the glass. On any recurring plan we remove it at no charge.

Valley questions

How long does the cottonwood actually last in Valley?

Fluff generally starts coming off in late May and runs a few weeks. Exactly when it stops depends on the year and on how close you sit to the river. Book the spring clean after it has finished, not during. Call us if you are unsure and we will tell you what we are seeing on other jobs.

Can you just hose off my screens instead of taking them out?

No. Cottonwood mats into the weave rather than sitting on top of it, so water hitting a loaded screen runs off the face and takes nothing with it. Screens come out, get cleaned through the mesh from both sides, dry, then go back square in their own openings.

My windows spot and I have no sprinklers. What is causing it?

Two likely culprits near the lakes. Overnight moisture off open water keeps glass damp long enough for airborne sand to bond to it, and any water you rinse with from a well leaves its mineral content behind as it dries. A test patch on a back elevation tells us which one you have.

Will your cleaning solution end up in the lake?

Not if the site lets us prevent it. We pre-wet ground so it holds runoff, work in sections rather than sheeting water down a slope, and stay off banks that drain straight in. Where a job cannot be done without runoff reaching the water, we say so instead of doing it.

Should I pressure wash my Valley deck before staining it?

Wash it, but not with pressure. High pressure cuts the soft grain out from between the hard grain and leaves a furrowed face that stain will never sit evenly on. Low pressure, a wood-safe solution, worked with the grain, then several dry days before anything is applied.

Can you clean a dock or a boathouse?

Docks and anything sitting over water get looked at case by case, because runoff has nowhere to go but in. Boathouses and lakeside sheds are usually straightforward with a soft wash. We would rather walk the property with you than put a number on it blind.

Do gutter guards handle cottonwood?

Not well. Fluff is fine enough to pass through most mesh and light enough to sit on top of whatever it cannot pass, which turns a guard into a lid you now have to clean. We do not sell guards or install them, so there is nothing in this answer for us.

Why does Valley need two gutter visits when one was enough at my old house?

Because you moved next to the trees. Cottonwood along the Platte sheds seed from late May, it mats directly over the downspout opening, and that plug then sits through the wettest months of the year. One fall visit leaves it in place for the entire summer.

Little trees are growing in my gutter. Is that bad?

It means damp debris has been sitting long enough to hold a seed and root it. The growth itself comes out easily. What matters is whether roots have worked into a seam and opened a leak, so we clear it and show you the joint underneath before you decide anything.
