The cottonwood problem at its source
Cottonwood seed fluff is the reason the metro needs a two-visit gutter schedule rather than the national once-a-year one, and along the Platte the early-summer visit stops being optional. The fluff comes off from late May, it is light enough to travel, and a gutter is exactly the shape to collect it. Unlike leaves it mats, and once a rain shower wets that mat it dries into something with the consistency of felt, sitting directly over the downspout opening.
At that point a garden hose does very little. The water runs off the mat rather than through it, which is why homeowners who flush their own gutters in June often conclude they are clear when they are not.
Then the July and August storms arrive, which is the heaviest rainfall the region gets, hitting a system that has been plugged since June.
In Valley we would rather clean in early summer and again in late fall than do one thorough visit, and we will say so even though it is the less convenient recommendation.
Before the fluff there is a first round nobody connects to their gutters. Cottonwood drops its catkins in April, the stringy flower spikes that end up all over a driveway, and those go into the trough weeks ahead of any seed. Stringy material knits together and rides down the run toward the elbow, so by the time June arrives there is already something at the bottom for the fluff to build on.
Anything green growing out of a gutter tells you how long sediment has been sitting in it. Cottonwood and maple seed will germinate in damp matted debris, and once roots find a seam the sealant goes with them, which is a leak at the joint rather than an overflow at the lip. We pull the growth by hand and show you the seam underneath. Repairing it is not our trade, so you get told, not sold.

Early summer first, late fall second
June is the visit that matters most here and it is the one people skip. Wait until the drop has stopped, usually a couple of weeks after it starts, then get everything cleared before the July storms arrive. Those are the heaviest rains the region gets and they hit a system that has been plugged since spring. Clearing in May while fluff is still falling buys you almost nothing.
Second visit belongs in late fall, and along the Platte we would rather have it done before the first hard freeze than after the last leaf. Cottonwood and willow in the bottoms shed earlier than the oaks and maples in town, so waiting on a bare tree is a poor signal in this corridor. A trough packed with wet matted debris that then freezes carries weight no hanger was sized for.

Do gutter guards handle cottonwood?
Not well. Fluff is fine enough to pass through most mesh and light enough to sit on top of whatever it cannot pass, which turns a guard into a lid you now have to clean. We do not sell guards or install them, so there is nothing in this answer for us.
Why does Valley need two gutter visits when one was enough at my old house?
Because you moved next to the trees. Cottonwood along the Platte sheds seed from late May, it mats directly over the downspout opening, and that plug then sits through the wettest months of the year. One fall visit leaves it in place for the entire summer.
Little trees are growing in my gutter. Is that bad?
