The Loess Hills put very fine wind-borne material into the air continuously, and it settles on roofs and washes into gutters with every rain. Silt is heavier than leaf litter and it goes to the bottom of the trough, where it forms a dense sediment layer that will not move on its own. It also travels down the run to the downspout elbow and packs there. A homeowner flushing from above sees water going in and assumes the system is clear; the sediment is below the water line and the plug is out of sight.
The bluff neighborhoods add a mature tree canopy on top of that, so many properties here get both problems at once: a heavy fall leaf load sitting over a silt bed that has been building all year.
Older gutter systems complete the picture. Decades-old runs on softened fascia sag, and a sagging run holds standing water permanently, which is a weight problem as well as a drainage one. Sediment makes a sagging run heavier still.
We clear by hand, flush every spout separately, and follow the water to where it exits. Sediment is the reason a visual check is not enough here.
Older properties here often have downspouts dropping into a buried tile that carries water off downhill, which works well right up until silt gets into it. We will flush a buried line from the top and tell you honestly what comes back. What we will not do is dig, snake, or claim a line is clear when it plainly is not draining. A collapsed clay tile under fifty years of settled ground is excavation, not gutter cleaning.
Sediment holds water the way a sponge does, so a trough with an inch of wet silt in it does not drain down before a hard freeze arrives. What forms instead is a block of ice sitting on hangers screwed into fascia that has been softening since the house went up. Runs come off walls in January for exactly that reason. The fix is not ice removal, which we do not do. It is getting the weight out in November.

We aim for the point where most of the load is down and the trough can still be flushed with running water, which usually lands in the back half of November, and we would sooner clean a gutter with a few leaves still to come than one already frozen.
Spring is the second visit, and over here it is about silt rather than leaves. Wind off the hills works all winter, meltwater carries whatever settled on the roof into the trough, and it beds down at the bottom. A spring visit in the bluff neighborhoods is a sediment job. Out on the flatter northern and eastern edges, with less canopy and less exposed slope, one fall visit generally covers it.
