Long runs, complex rooflines, and plugs you cannot see

Low pressure exterior house washing in Omaha, NE

Every one of those turns is a place debris slows down and collects. A valley concentrates a large area of roof into a narrow discharge point, so whatever comes off that section of roof arrives in one place at volume. On a complex roof, the gutter directly under a valley will be carrying several times what the rest of the run carries, and it is usually nowhere near the downspout.

The trees are young, so the material is mostly fine: wind-blown grit, shingle granules off newer roofs shedding their initial loose grit, seed material from the landscaping. Fine material travels further down the run than leaves do, which means it reaches the elbows and plugs them from inside.

The result is a system that can look completely clear from a ladder while the water has nowhere to go. Flushing every downspout separately and following the water to where it exits is the only way to know, and it is the step most often skipped on a long run because it takes time.

Two visits a year, and the summer one matters more than people expect.

Watch for a downspout that empties onto a lower roof section. Complex rooflines produce that arrangement constantly, because an upper run has nowhere else to go, so it discharges onto the shingles below and everything the upper roof collects arrives in the lower gutter at one point. That lower section fills faster than anything else on the house, and it usually wears a stripe into the shingles under the outlet.

Underground drain lines are the other item worth raising. Plenty of newer lots have downspouts tied into buried pipe running out to the street or a rear swale, and those silt up slowly where nobody can see them. We test by running water in and timing how fast it takes it. If it backs up, that is jetting work for a drain contractor, not something we will pretend to fix.

What that means on your property

Two-story window cleaning on an Omaha-area lake home
  • Valley discharge points checked, not just the visible run
  • Fine debris travels to the elbows, so every spout is flushed
  • Long complex runs flow-tested end to end

June matters more here than October does

Residential window cleaning on a modern Omaha home

Get the summer visit on the calendar. July and August bring the heaviest rain of the year, and a steep complex roof funnels that volume into a handful of valleys before any of it reaches a gutter. Water arriving at a valley outlet has real speed behind it, and if the run below is carrying packed grit it goes over the front lip and lands at the foundation instead.

Fall timing depends on your lot as much as on the trees. Walkout and lookout lots are common through these developments, and a rear elevation on one is effectively an extra story with a slope underneath it. We will not set a ladder on ground that is saturated or frozen hard, so the back of the house sometimes decides the date. Book before Thanksgiving and there is room to move.

Gutter Cleaning in Gretna, asked and answered

How often do gutters need doing on a Gretna new build?

Twice a year for most. The trees are young, so people assume once is plenty, but fine grit and seed material travel much further down the run than leaves do and pack at the elbows. Of the two visits, the summer one matters more.

Do you check the underground downspout drains?

We run water into them and time how quickly the line takes it, so you know whether it is flowing. Clearing a blocked buried line takes a jetter and a camera, which is a drain contractor's work. We will tell you what we saw and stop there.

The gutter looked clean but the water still overflows. Why?

Almost always a plug in an elbow, or a valley outlet carrying more than its share. A trough can be spotless along its whole visible length while the bend at the bottom of the downspout is solid. Flushing each spout separately is the only check that means anything.
